Clean-In-Place
Clean-In-Place
Proper cleaning between bioprocess cultures is critical to prevent cross contamination of protein or waste residues. Small scale bioreactors may be cleaned mechanically using standard laboratory practices. For large scale systems, biopharm engineers implement Clean-In-Place (CIP) processes to clean
bioreactors
, storage vessels and processing tubing. CIP typically uses both mechanical (high-pressure spray) and chemical action to remove residue. Common CIP chemicals include caustics, acids, and hydrogen peroxide or other sanitizing solutions. As with SIP equipment, CIP systems require thorough validation to ensure repeatable performance.
